Claire Riordan holds both a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering in Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, with a minor in Biochemical Engineering, from University College Dublin in Ireland. Her MEng research, carried out in the University of Maryland in the US, focused on metabolic flux analysis, using dual-labelled isotopes to increase the certainty of the flux map produced. Claire interned with Pfizer in New York City, US, with the pharmaceutical operations and global supply team, with Wanhua Chemicals in Yantai, China, studying biosurfactant production and scale up, and with Eli Lilly in Cork, Ireland, studying convergent synthesis of a continuously produced peptide. Within SMARTINCS, Claire will be hosted by Micropore Technologies in Redcar, UK, and earn her PhD at Cambridge University, also in the UK. Her research focusses on the optimisation of membrane encapsulation for the formation of capsules used in self-healing concrete. The project assesses various shell and cargo materials, particle morphologies, encapsulation methods, as well as triggering mechanisms and testing methods. Claire is looking forward to collaborating with and learning from the professionals, professors, and other early stage researchers of the SMARTINCS consortium.
