CSIC is Spain’s largest public research institution and plays a key role in scientific and technological policy in Spain and worldwide. Its main objective is to foster, coordinate, develop and promote Scientific and Technical research to contribute on the advancing knowledge and economic, social and cultural development

CSIC is a major player in the development of the European research area and therefore a significant contributor to the European integration process. CSIC is an active member in Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC), Raw Materials and Health, of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT).

The Institute for Construction Sciences “Eduardo Torroja” (IETcc), that belongs to CSIC, is specialized in: physic-chemistry of cement and concrete, advance nanotechnology and multifunctional building materials, structural engineering, roads, building energy saving, durability, risk and safety of structures. It has wide analytical facilities and large-scale fabrication and testing laboratories. This Institute is an active member and co-founder of several international bodies: UEATC, EOTA, CEB, CIB, RILEM and ENBRI. As member of UEATC delivers the “European Technical Assessment” (ETA) for innovative construction products. IETcc collaborates in Standard developing (CEN, AENOR) and is permanent member of the Spanish construction code (EHE) and the EUROCODE.

All facilities of CSIC are available and within the general laboratory facilities of the IETcc-CSIC we have the following equipment: general services of the centre for microstructural analysis (XRD, TG/DTA, IR, SEM back scattering, EDX, polishing machine), mercury intrusion porosimetry, optical microscopy, ionic chromatography, N2 BET, large concrete production, large concrete mechanical performance elements. Within the research group: equipment for electrochemical tests for rebar corrosion (linear polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrical resistivity), humidity and temperature controlled chambers for aging of concrete, extreme environment test facilities (freeze/thaw, furnaces for high temperature), mortar/ concrete production facilities, mechanical test machine for compression and bending of concrete samples, durability tests (water permeability, gas permeability, ion transport), early age and long term shrinkage, grinding machine, H testing method for concrete, pore extraction facilities, sample conditioning, infiltration test cells
