Politecnico di Torino was founded in 1906 from the roots of the Technical School for Engineers created in 1859. Today, it is a leading public university in technical-scientific teaching and research, with over 33,000 students from more than 100 countries. It is ranked as the 33th University in the world in the field of Engineering and Technology (by faculty) in 2018 and as the 1st one in the Graduate Employability Ranking in 2017. It has close relationships with industry, government authorities and international institutions. With more than 400 bilateral international agreements and 100 double degree agreements, it has also links with the most prestigious Universities in Europe and it is part of some of the major European interuniversity networks, such as CESAER, CLUSTER, EUA, Sefi, T.I.M.E. It is actively involved in European research, with 230 projects approved within FP7 (33 MSCA) and 158 projects approved within Horizon 2020 (26 MSCA). In November 2013, it was acknowledged by the EU Commission through the 'HR Excellence in Research' award.

The Dept. of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering, provides equipment for mechanical characterization (universal testing machines operating in static or dynamic conditions, tensile, compressive or bending modes, with maximum forces ranging from 10 N to 1000 kN) and non-destructive characterization (single-point laser vibrometer, ultrasonic testing devices). The Dept. of Applied Science and Technology, with its Institute of Science and Engineering of Materials for Innovative Technologies, provides equipment for durability testing (water permeability, freezing-thawing, thermal cycles), micro-structural characterization (impedancemeter, ESEM, XRD), specimen production and curing.
